LORE
Under the lower levels of the Eloise Asylum, deep in the long-forgotten sewers, something has taken refuge. The cavernous pipe walls are slick with decades of mildew and slime, the perfect conditions for a fresh brood.
Massive clutches of bioluminescent eggs are smeared across the tubular walls in a thick mucus, with no regard for what’s up or down. Each clutch holds dozens of bulbous eggs that quiver and stretch as the eight-legged larvae inside squirm about in a stew of amniotic fluid. The cavernous drainage system is now teeming with life. Fed by the unceasing stream of drainage and waste from grounds of Eloise, the brood grows in number every hour, and they are becoming restless. The eggs pulse sympathetically with their neighbors, creating waves of light that travel outward through the tunnels, communicating a message that emanates from somewhere – something – deeper underground.
The HIVE is on full alert.
ABOUT
The HIVE is an integrated media installation developed for the Eloise Asylum, an immersive horror attraction in Detroit, Michigan. The installation utilizes 5 projectors to fill 100 acrylic hemispheres with video, creating the illusion that each sphere is a mucus-filled spider-mutant egg.
THE . . . TANK
A custom live-action viscous-aquatic filming apparatus – lovingly referred to as the “Lube Tank” – and its contents were engineered specifically to film content for this installation. The tank includes a puppeteering rig that allows a purpose-designed alien spider puppet to be articulated while submerged within a bath of frothy, viscous mixture of oils and lubricants.
