Living Sculptures
NATURE x TECHNOLOGY
Nature and technology seem to be inherently at odds with each other. The processes of manufacturing digital devices pollutes or otherwise degrades the environment, while nature is quick to destroy and reclaim delicate technology with rust, dust, bugs, and humidity.
Nature and technology represent the ends of the spectrum of civilization. On one end, the elemental water and earth from which life emerged, and on the other end the latest and greatest concentration of humanity’s collective intelligence and efforts.
The DIGITAL TERRARIA series was born out of an impulse to wrap the ends of this spectrum onto each other, like a color wheel blends red and ultraviolet into the illusion of a seamless loop.
The lushness of color, movement, and texture that results from the pairing of nature and technology is undeniably captivating. Yet, the tension between the two persists, manifesting in the compounding upkeep needed to maintain lockstep between two hungry ecosystems. The chimeric systems must be supplied with water, nutrients, sunlight, and electricity, and regularly pruned and edited to form.
